BODY
PIERCING AFTERCARE INSTRUCTIONS
All
External body piercings
should be cleaned 2 times
daily (NO MORE). It is
important that you do not
skip cleanings, but also
that you do not over clean
your new piercing (Yes,
there is such a thing as
cleaning too much; over
cleaning will irritate
the piercing and SLOW the
healing). Refrain from
cleaning your piercing
today. Your cleaning schedule
will begin tomorrow morning,
unless it is early in the
day then begin tonight.
Recommended
Cleaning Products: Neutrogena
Soap (just the basic
soap,
not the anti-bacterial)
OR Spectro
Jel Unscented (the
generic brand will work
as well) AND Sea
Salt (not bath,
Epsom or table salt). All
of these products are available
from a pharmacy or local
grocery store.
DO
NOT USE: Peroxide,
Rubbing Alcohol or Polysporin.
They will clog/dry out
your piercing & guarantee
problems. |
| CLEANING |
- Soak warm water around
the piercing or let
warm water run over
it in the shower (if
you are cleaning in
the shower it will
be the LAST thing you
clean).
- Gently remove any
crust or secreted matter
from both sides of
the piercing with a
cotton swab (NEVER
use your finger nails
as they may tear the
piercing).
- Lather a small amount
of soap (in the case
of Spectro Jel, just
spread some all over
your hands), making
sure to thoroughly
cleanse your hands,
then onto the jewelry
and surrounding area.
- Gently rotate the
jewelry through the
piercing (no more then
twice). If the jewelry
does not want to move
DON'T FORCE IT! Rotating
is not important and
your healing will progress
fine without it. In
the case of barbells,
just move it back and
forth slightly.
- Again, using warm
water, rinse the piercing
well being sure to
remove all traces of
soap.
- Carefully pat the
area dry with a NEW
paper towel.

- Heat up a cup of
water and add ¼ teaspoon
of the sea salt. Stir
well. Let the water
cool to room temperature
(this mixture can also
be made in larger quantities
and stored in a sealed
container till needed).
Using a cotton ball
or swab, soak the piercing
and the area with the
mixture. Gently rotate
the jewelry if needed.
- Rinse the area with
clean warm water. Pat
dry with a paper towel.
HELPFUL
HINTS & ADDED ADVICE |
- Weekly salt-water
soaks can help to speed
the healing. Make a
mixture following the
recipe above and soak
your piercing using
a shot glass. Or you
can pour a cut of salt
into a bath and soak.
This soak should last
approx. 15 mins. and
the piercing will need
to be rinsed with clean
water after.
- Always make sure
your hands are washed
before you clean your
piercing. NEVER touch
or allow your piercing
to be touched with
unwashed hands (or
for anyone else's hands
for that matter).
- The myth that the
jewelry must be turned
constantly is just
that.a myth! Constant
turning or touching
will prolong healing
and could promote rejection
(when the piercing
comes through the skin)
or at the worst, infection.
- Avoid wearing tight
clothing against the
piercing.
- It is not advised
to swim in lakes, pools,
rivers, or oceans for
a minimum of 4 weeks.
- Do not tan (in a
tanning bed) for at
least 2 weeks and when
you start again, stay
clear of oil based
lotions.
- DO NOT USE TABLE
SALT!!! This type of
salt will cause dryness
and cracking in the
piercing.
The
healing time for most
piercings, excluding
navel, is between 8-12
weeks. The navel
will take 3-6 months.
During these times it
is normal for the piercing
to be red, sensitive
and to secrete lymph
(yellowish/white crusties).
This is how the body
deals with foreign matter
and it will continue
for the entire healing
period. It is important
that you continue cleaning
for this entire time
and that the initial
jewelry not be removed.
The best way to know
if the piercing is healed
and ready to be changed
is to come back to see
us. It is VERY important
that you do not try to
change the jewelry yourself
or by friends and that
you only take the advice
and guidance from a member
of our staff. We are
here to help and welcome
the opportunity to assist
you in whatever problems
or advice that you may
need.
